Unlocking Third Slots – to unlock the third row of farming slots you need to complete a quest titled 'Talons Of Ire And Ice'. it is an optional quest which can only be accessed once you unlock Seven-star quests.
In this quest, you will have to hunt a Legiana and an Odogaron after completing this return to the Botanical chief and you will have obtained the third row at the research center.

The Botanical Research Center in Astera allows you to plant and grows seeds. The earliest seeds you can plant are Might Seeds, but you'll find others as you progress.
There are lots of uses for the farm (growing crafting materials, earning zenny) but all of them take time. You can grow more in the exact same amount of time by unlocking extra farming slot.
You can unlock up to three slots in the farm — you start with only one, and can earn a second and third slot.
